Account Based Marketing (ABM): The new paradigm in B2B

Account Based Marketing (ABM) comes to solve one of the most excruciating pains in the corporate reality, the misalignment between marketing and sales.

What is Account Based Marketing?

Account-based marketing (ABM) is a new paradign in B2B marketing strategy, with a customer experience-centric approach requiring a higher collaboration between sales and marketing teams, targeting specific buying groups inside carefully selected accounts and using innovative technology and data.

The basic idea behind it is to generate a coordinated and personalized account-based experience for key stakeholders, or buying groups, within each account.

This higher level of collaboration required is definitely one of the most trickiest aspects of ABM and needs a mindset change to achieve it. Marketers should shift their way of thinking from massive, random individuals to specific personas and buying groups or for sales people to trust marketing technology and data to make sales decisions, to mention some.

Why Account Based Marketing is important?

B2B marketing teams works on a lead-based inbound marketing model, driving awareness and engaging the largest number of potential individual leads, then nurturing those leads and guiding them down the funnel toward sales.

Account Based Marketing is not designed to eliminate this, but to complement the go-to-market, helping the marketer to keep in mind that scaling is not always the best fit to target strategic, large or tier 1, tier 2 accounts.

Some benefits of Account Based Marketing

Since we are designing activities to specific accounts, we should be able now to drive attributed revenue. We are also contributing to the alignment of the most important customer-facing actors of the company; sales and marketing teams. And we are also providing a better customer experience and increasing the likelihood of boost revenue, by increasing cross-sell and upsell (incremental revenue) or by discovering new market segments or verticals (new revenue).

Execution and Tactics

  • Account Scoring: involves the analysis and evaluation of the accounts to be considered in the plan, a common language and an alignment of priorities. The criteria can be based on multiple factors like high yielding accounts, quick wins, strategic importance, clients with the competitors… Then you can group them in diferent Tiers or segments.
  • Identifying Personas and Buying Groups: Working close with the Account Manager or Account Lead will help to identify key personas like the decision-maker, the sponsor or influencer, the guru or the nefarious “no-noway-notime-nomoney”.
  • Define the best tactics for each Tier: in-person programs, sales outreachs, direct and personalized emails, dedicated events, appointment setting, content syndication… Once you have a solid understanding of the accounts, you can even engage them with personalized content in multiple channels in consistent and complementary touchpoints.
  • Measure, analyze and iterate. Know what is working and how this accounts are performing is key to iterate your model and look constantly for improvements.

While ABM is not a new way to target tiered accounts, it is in its practice. Tools and data now make it scalable and let us focus on whole lifecycle marketing for key accounts, providing a superior account-based experience to leads by automatically delivering relevant messages. Today’s buyers demand personalized content and engagement and customer experience is a major competitive differentiator.

Also probably because the magnitude (in money, time and pain) of the projects involving deploying or migrating a CRM, I will only give you here the 2019 selection of Gartner about that. Good Luck.

Designing a Website Opener

Adobe After Effects is a VFX and Motion Design software part of the Adobe Creative Cloud suite. It took me a couple Youtube tutorials and a Domestika crash course just to get familiar with the interface and some basic functionalities to make this website opener work.

One of the discoveries I recently made is these huge online marketplaces of motion graphics Templates and Presets. It simplifies the designing process by using others previous work. The coolest templates are not free, but for a small amount of cash you can save houndreds of hours of programming effects.

For this website opener I was looking for something in the same brand theme of Retrofuturism, Tech, Arcade and Pop Culture like in the rest of the web.

So here is the result:

Just having some fun with Adobe After Effects

The Rise of Digital Assets

The definition of a digital asset is “anything that exists in binary data which is self-contained, uniquely identifiable, and has a value or ability to use.” The first ever digital assets were those early computer programs itselves.

Later on in the 90´s, music, video and images digitalized and acquired digital intrinsic value. With the irruption of the blockchain technology and the capacity of tokenization of almost everything, digital assets could be entirely created, traded and secured in the digital world.

The next generation of 3D Printing technology will give us the ability to build anything anywhere. Digital assets will become critical in space exploration for example, where the supply chains are expensive and deadly slow. Printing spare parts for your Mars Rover onsite will soon become a reallity. When we will see a food printer like in the Enterprise of Star Trek?

Is a new era for designers and digital assets marketplaces.

Growth Hacking: Some useful hacks

The phrase “growth hacker” was coined by Sean Ellis in 2010. In 2010 he wrote his famous blog article Find a Growth Hacker for Your Startup.

“Once startups are ready to scale, their biggest challenge is often hiring someone capable of leading the growth charge.  A marketer with the right talents and approach can kick some serious ass once product-market fit and an efficient conversion/monetization process have been proven. […]

” The common characteristic seems to be an ability to take responsibility for growth and an entrepreneurial drive (it’s risky taking that responsibility).  The right growth hacker will have a burning desire to connect your target market with your must have solution.  They must have the creativity to figure out unique ways of driving growth in addition to testing/evolving the techniques proven by other companies. “

Sean Ellis. CEO of GrowthHackers.com. Previous roles include first marketer at Dropbox, Lookout, Xobni, LogMeIn (IPO), and Uproar (IPO). Also interim marketing exec roles at Eventbrite, Socialcast, and Webs.

The starting point for growth hacking pivotate around the concept of Product/Market Fit.

Here some hacks and ideas (work in progress)

#1 NARROW DOWN FAR ENOUGH YOUR IDEAL CUSTOMER. Market and Niche correct segmentation is really important.

#2 OWN YOUR DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS. Databases, maillists… and LEVERAGE EXISTING ONES.

#3 CREATE CONTENT TO NURTURE YOUR AUDIENCE. A fundamental part of the engagement by building a relationship and a COMMUNITY providing value.

#4 STORYTELLING.

“Growth begins with words. Stories, they move people. And moving people is magical for building a business on your own terms, without woryying about competition.”

#5 CUSTOMER ZERO. Deliver a great CX to every single customer, like they are all the first one.

#6 PRESS, ALTERNATIVE ADS, WORD OF MOUTH, REFERRALS and SEO DONE RIGHT.

#7 BE AUTHENTIC, AND HUMAN.

Systems Dynamics – First approach

What is it?

System dynamics (SD) is a technique for strategic and policy simulation modeling based on feedback systems theory. It was invented in the late 1950s by Jay Forrester, a pioneer in engineering and computer design. Since then, SD has developed as its own field, distinct from the larger fields of operations research and management science to which it is related.

SD unites social and behavioral science with the nitty-gritty details of planning and accounting, and requires the careful design and construction of original models with many interacting variables.  Although SD modeling is technically demanding, the logic and results of a good SD model are neither esoteric nor hard for decision makers to understand.  And although SD models are sophisticated, they are also compact enough to run instantly on a laptop computer, permitting a whole series of alternative assumptions and scenarios to be tested quickly and thoroughly in interactive strategy development sessions.

About Jay W. Forrester. Professor Emeritus of Management System Dynamics

Jay W. Forrester founded the growing field of system dynamics. His research includes the System Dynamics National Model, which generates the major observed modes of economic behavior; a new type of dynamics-based management education; and system dynamics as a unifying theme in pre-college education.

A pioneer in early digital computer development, Forrester invented random-access magnetic-core memory during the first wave of modern computers.

Forrester has received numerous awards for his books, nine honorary degrees from universities around the world, and the National Medal of Technology, awarded by the President of the United States.
